![]() ![]() Like our top pick, this Newtonian-style reflector telescope has a 5-inch mirror, but it’s designed to sit on a tabletop rather than on a tripod, so it works best if you have a picnic table or other support to set it on. COSTCO TELESCOPE MANUALWith that in mind, some of our experts told us they preferred (and even advised) learning the ins and outs of astronomy on a manual telescope, so if you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll become a smarter stargazer. One reason you may not want a manual telescope: You have to collimate (align) the telescope’s mirrors, which can be tedious or frustrating if you weren’t aware it had to be done. The Astronomers Without Borders OneSky Reflector Telescope offers the most scope for the money if you don’t want an electronic GPS function (meaning it won’t automatically find the specific celestial bodies you seek). COSTCO TELESCOPE PORTABLEThe NexStar 5SE weighs 15 pounds, which is very portable relative to other options out there, so you should have no problem packing it up into a trunk and setting it up on location. Unlike with some of the NexStar 5SE’s competitors, this controller worked flawlessly in our tests, offering micro adjustments and responsive tracking with the attached controller system. Instead of fumbling through the learning curve of reading star charts and aligning the telescope manually, you can align and focus your telescope on a myriad of celestial objects with the press of a button. This telescope operates on a fully computerized system and gives you a handheld controller to guide it. It has a primary 5-inch mirror, which is big enough for a light-gathering capacity that yields crisp images of some of the best objects in our solar system, from Saturn’s rings to Jupiter’s cloud bands, and provides sufficient power to introduce you to objects in the deep sky. COSTCO TELESCOPE PLUSmine came with 1.25 diagonal too, I'm sure that none came with a 2" diagonal but they will take 2" diagonals and 2" eyepieces which is a real plus for a scope selling at that price. Our overall pick for the best amateur telescope, the Celestron NexStar 5SE is a Schmidt-Cassegrain scope, a design that uses both lenses and mirrors in a relatively compact package. They do go through a lot batteries quickly. or find a suitable wall plug-in power supply and use it as well to avoid using the battery pack. If you rip apart a 9 volt battery and remove the pos/neg connector you can solder wires to it and connect them to a car lighter socket and power your mount that way. I believe the battery pack has a 9volt type connector leading into the mount. I don't think you will find a better scope for the money. I kept the scope itself and have two mounts to use with it (the other is eq5). I sold my mount with a different scope a while back. Some say it had 2" 90 degree diagonal, but this one has 1.25" 45 degree one.įrom your pics it looks exactly like mine when I got it. I wonder those old 102 GTs are exactly same as current model in Costco. I have read some 102 GT articles thanks to 'droid' above. If I use light weight eyepieces without heavy accessories, then somehow the mount could be tolerable in terms of level of shaking? CG4's tripod legs looked huge, when compared with 102 GT's legs. Sometimes ago, I saw Celestron CG4 mount + 6" reflector displayed in a local science shop. Mine is used for a Lunt solar cause I thought it undersized for my modified heavier 102 scope. If weight is added to the scope (rings dovetail finder, EP, focuser ) then the mount capacity (8lbs) is challenged. Don't think it will even balance in that dovetails range with light EP's and it adds to the wobble factor. Yea, $280 is pushing it a bit with that tripod and bolted undersized dovetail. Whether this is a bargain at $280, I don't know but it's a project. The dovetail bolted to the tube is problematic, rings are the right solution. Good scope, the mount is adequate, the tripod woefully undersized. Other improvements and good EP's can make this a very good 100mm scope Also the short Vixen dovetail is a weak area, I replace the org with rings and a decent dovetail. I ended up putting some wooden legs on the tripod which made a great improvement over the spindly org metal legs. Good scope, decent mount, garbage tripod. ![]()
